The Penn State student was fatally shot just outside his family’s home in South Philadelphia around 1:30 a.m. on June 6, 6ABC reported.

According to NBC 10, video footage from a neighbor’s home showed two men talking to Schmidt, who is not visible in the video. The video also appears to show Schmidt following them and asking for his cell phone.

Schmidt’s father Bill said his son was at a local bar watching the NBA Finals with friends and was coming home when he was shot.

“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty,” he said, ABC 7 reported.
