GOOD Morning America’s Janai Norman has revealed she quietly battled mental health issues and received treatment in a psychiatric facility.
The news anchor is opening up about her personal struggles, just weeks after her abrupt firing from GMA.
In an article published on Friday, Janai, 36, recalled to People how she overcame some serious health challenges shortly after starting her job as the show’s weekend co-anchor.
Janai revealed she volunteered to cover a hurricane in the fall of 2022, which she admitted she was “not equipped at all to handle.”
When she returned, the journalist said she began having suicidal ideations and immediately checked herself into a psychiatric hospital for treatment.
It was there that Janai was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, which she said forced her to “face the unresolved trauma” she had yet to deal with.
“That really shifted my relationship with so many aspects of my life, but especially with work,” Janai told the outlet.
“It really helped me separate my worth from my work. What I did for a paycheck was no longer tied to my sense of purpose.
“That was really the work of choosing myself and breaking news barriers and stigmas along the way,” she added.
Janai shared that she strives to rid the stigma of mental illness by talking about her own experiences.
“Checking myself into the hospital, asking for help, getting the help, getting the diagnosis — that’s what pointed me in the direction of the right kind of therapy that finally started making a difference for me.”
She continued, “I didn’t even know that there were so many different types of therapies, but talking about it helps people learn more about it. We’ve just got to talk about it all more.”
Janai further discusses her battle with mental health and the evolution of her career in her upcoming memoir, Breaking, set for release on January 5, 2027.
The TV personality reflects on her years as a correspondent at NewsOne before signing on with GMA, where she spent the last four years.
She confirmed her departure from the show in an Instagram video message on April 4.
Janai implied to her followers that it wasn’t her decision to leave and said that she wished she had more time.
Earlier, the Daily Mail reported that Janai’s exit was due to her contract expiring, and the network opted not to renew it.
Janai’s entire life has been turned upside down since she was axed from GMA.
On Thursday, The U.S. Sun confirmed through real estate records that Janai placed her massive New Jersey home on the market.
The six-bedroom suburban mansion that she shares with her husband and three children is listed for $3.2 million.
It’s unknown where the family is headed next.
